Spanish IThe goal of Spanish I is to emphasize basic structures of the language through intensive practice in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
In addition to introducing Hispanophone culture, current events and the arts, thematic units revolve around getting acquainted; talking about school; time/weather/date, stating preferences and explaining what people are doing; describing people and things. The major grammatical concepts studied include conjugating regular and irregular verbs, using indefinite and definite articles; adjective agreement and placement; making suggestions and commands. |
Spanish II / II HonorsIn Spanish II, the purpose of this course is to help the students continue with basic structures of the language through listening, speaking, reading, writing skills, and cultural awareness. This course will feature units of new grammar and vocabulary.
The units/etapas feature travel, family, art, Hispanic foods, and celebrations in the Spanish world. Students are exposed to many grammatical new concepts preterite, imperfect, object pronouns, and subjunctive. In Spanish II Honors, the students are presented with authentic materials that emphasize the vocabulary and grammar concepts to be studied in each unit. Students will present skits, videos, games, and other creative ways to illustrate mastery of the vocabulary and grammar studied. |
Spanish III / III HonorsIn Spanish Three, students will be fine-tuning the Spanish skills they acquired in both Spanish One as well as Spanish Two. In addition, this course is rich in new vocabulary points and more in-depth opportunities to strengthen reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
The units/etapas covered explore such topics as personal characteristics, fashion, chores/daily routine, politics/community, the environment, animals and plants, graduation, and holiday celebrations. In Spanish Three Honors, students will be fine-tuning, strengthening, and, in some cases, mastering many of the Spanish skills that they acquired in both Spanish One as well as Spanish Two. In addition, this course is rich in new vocabulary points and more in-depth opportunities to strengthen reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills at an accelerated pace in the target language. Spanish IV /IB Year 1The Spanish IV / IB Year 1 curriculum reinforces students’ proficiency across the five goals of the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century as well as advanced level of Spanish proficiency through the use of authentic materials and sources. The course builds on students’ speaking, listening, reading, writing, and cultural awareness.
IB Year 1 is a college-level course, split over two years. Students must be at least a junior to take this course. No native speakers may take IB Spanish; heritage speakers, however, may take this course. |
AP Spanish / IB Year 2The AP Language and Culture and IB Year 2 classes are conducted in Spanish. These courses are organized thematically, with authentic reading and listening tasks and presentational and interpersonal writing and speaking activities focusing on a unifying theme. Themes help integrate language and content while developing students’ understanding of culture.
A variety of materials will be used in this course. These include authentic texts such as newspaper & magazine articles, literary text and excerpts from novels or sources online, as well as movies videos, and music. The IB Year 2 class is a continuation of the IB Year 1 class. While no native speakers may take the IB Year 2 class, native speakers may take AP Spanish. |
